A bit to the north of Miami, located at West Palm Beach, the Lion Country Safari is worth the trip for animal lovers desiring to see their favorites in an open environment. When Lion Country Safari opened in 1967, it was the first drive-through animal park in the U.S. It is now home to over 1,000 animals, including zebra, giraffe, elephants, lions and chimpanzees. The drive-through preserve is approximately 5 miles. Additionally, there is a walk-through area of the park named Safari World, which includes a number of animal exhibits, aviaries and a petting zoo. The park also features boat rides, a merry-go-round, a restaurant, picnic areas, and gift shops. Lion Country Safari is involved in the breeding of endangered and threatened species, including white rhinos and the brown pelican. The park is also a rehab facility, caring for injured wildlife. The KOA Campground was added to Lion Country Safari in the 1980s and includes over 200 campsites.
