The Jackie Gleason Theater of Performing Arts is a 2,705-seat theater and the home of the Miami Beach Broadway Series, which has presented such hits as Rent, Les Miserables, and Phantom of the Opera. The theater also hosts dance performances, such as Mikhail Barysnikov and The Miami City Ballet. The nations top tours are sure to stop here. The theater began as the Miami Beach Auditorium and, back in the 1960s, hosted television tapings of the Dick Clark Show and the Ed Sullivan Show. In 1964 and for seven years thereafter, Jackie Gleasons televised variety show was taped here. In the 1970s, Broadway attractions came to the theater and it was shortly renamed the Miami Beach Theater of the Performing Arts. In 1984, the Walk of Stars was created just outside the box office to honor celebrities dedicated to Miami Beachs culture. In 1987, the theater was renamed the Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts in honor of the great one.
