In the mid 1920s, this magnificent hotel was created by the vision of George Merrick and is now designated a National Historic Landmark. The hotels Giralda Tower is a landmark in and of itself and the Biltmore pool is the largest hotel swimming pool in the U.S. Upon its opening, the hotel hosted guests such as Al Capone, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Ginger Rogers, the Vanderbilts and the Roosevelts. The hotel was known for its gala balls, synchronized swimming events at the pool, and world class golf tournaments. At one time Johnny Weissmuller was a swimming instructor at the Biltmore pool. During World War II, the hotel became a military hospital and remained a veterans hospital until the late 1960s. It later became a part of the University of Miamis school of medicine. In the 1980s, the hotel was fully restored and on New Years Eve of 1987, the hotel reopened in all its magnificence. A few years later, the golf course was restored designed by Donald Ross. Free walking tours are provided most Sundays and take you through the hotels beautiful grounds.
